Many parents ask about what ‘play’ looks like in the
kindergarten classroom and what students are learning. Play has a very important role in early
learning and is used to further children’s learning in all areas of the
Kindergarten Programme.
Learning centres that are based on the Ontario Ministry of
Education’s Kindergarten Program have
been set up in the classroom where the children engage in play with their
classmates and their teachers. Learning
centres in the classroom include reading, writing, construction, math, sensory,
art, drama, motor, light centre, sand and water and science centres. Literacy and math are also integrated
throughout all the learning centres.
Materials have been purposefully arranged at each learning centre to
encourage students to problem solve, explore and investigate, engage in the
inquiry process and share their learning with others.
Research shows that learning through play rather than the
traditional worksheets is how children learn best.
