The Pumpkin and Pumpkin Seeds

On Friday October 30th, we carved our two big pumpkins in the classroom. The girls and boys really liked cleaning out the insides of the pumpkin.

We predicted which pumpkin would have the most seeds inside. Turned out that the bigger pumpkin had more seeds. Then we washed the pumpkin seeds and set them aside.


The girls and boys had come up with a plan for a  happy Jack-o-Lantern and an angry Jack-o-Lantern. Then we turned off the lights, carved the faces and placed the battery candles inside.


It was a fun day full of costumes and Halloween delights.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back Kindergarten! I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful summer. Last week I went into the school to set up our classroom. Here are some photographs of our learning space, ready for you on Tuesday.

Families, our classroom line up is the same as last year.

Remember to send an extra pair of velcro running shoes to keep at school (with your child's name or initials written somewhere on the shoes).

Also send a set of extra clothing in a ziplock bag with their name on the bag.

Race to the Top

We have a new math game in our class called Race to the Top. Students colour in squares each time they roll a dice. They make predictions about which number will win. They talk about when two numbers are tied (same). They talk about which numbers come in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Lots of math talk with this game!

City Maps

We continue to learn about our city Toronto in the classroom. One student asked if she could draw a map and told us that she would need BIG paper. We gave her a large piece of paper. Next thing we knew, others wanted big paper. Groups of students began working together to draw maps of the local community.

The Carnation Experiment

After our celery experiment students were very interested in doing more science experiments. We brought in some white carnations and followed the same process as our celery experiment but with 4 colours this time!

 

 

We added 10 drops of food colouring into the water in the glass jars.

 

Then we put 2 stems of carnations into each jar.

 

 

 

 

By the end of Thursday, students noticed that the carnations inside the blue jar were just starting to change colour around the edges of the petals.

Many students have predicted that when they come back to school on Monday the flowers will all be yellow, blue, green and red!

We will have to see on Monday.

Rock Hunt

One day two students brought in some rocks that they had found outside. They shared their rocks during Sharing Time.

At the end of the day before we went outside, we read a story called "If You Find a Rock" By Peggy Christian. In it, she describes all the different types of rocks you can find out in nature.

A sitting rock. A skipping rock. A climbing rock. A writing rock. A kicking rock.

The students had a purpose when they went outside. They were ready to find as many different types of rocks that they could find. They had the most fun using the 'writing rocks' they found.

 

We also discovered some other interesting materials when we were outside. Bricks, moss and an acorn.

 

Some students wondered if the bricks were made from rock because they were very heavy and some rocks can be heavy.
