Community Walk

We spent a morning walking through the local neighbourhood looking at the homes we live in. Here are some photographs of our walk.

Measuring Plants

The mystery plants have been growing up fast! 

We have been measuring them in the classroom as they grow and recording our observations on sticky notes or paper.

The Doctors

During February the children wanted a Doctor / Dentist office in the dramatic play area. It all began one day when one student create a Doctor mask at the art studio. Suddenly we had an entire class wearing hand-crafted doctor masks, asking each other if they needed a needle or a bandage. The next day, with everyone in the class helping, we put away the 'home' materials and brought out the 'doctor' materials for dramatic play.

This brought out a lot of Language with the children as they acted out their own experiences of going to the Dentist and Doctor. Children took turns being the patients or the doctors. They used clipboards to record patient information and pretended to hand out medicine and doctor notes. It was a very popular learning experience for everyone in the classroom!

Mathematical Expression

Math is beautiful, just like art! The children continue to explore different shapes in the classroom. Below are just a small sample of the many beautiful designs the children created over the past few weeks.

As the children work together, they use math language. They name the shapes (square, diamond, triangle, trapezoid, etc). They also talk to each other using placement language (above, beside, below, under, etc). We talk about the characteristics of the shapes (length, size, sides, corners, etc).

This is an example of how we use materials instead of traditional worksheets to teach and model early math skills in our classroom.
